8:30-3:30
NATIVE PLANT SALE
More than 100 varieties of wildflowers, ferns, vines, trees and shrubs. Supplied by Dancing Fern Nursery & Oak Grove Nursery.
(Will be restocked with new plants on Sunday.)

FAMILY FUN
Events for young naturalists. All activities free for children.
No pre-registration is needed. Hayrides, Horse rides, Fishing, Petting Zoo, Hikes, Caving Adventure, and more!

— HIKES - GARDEN TOUR - KEYNOTE EVENT - WORKSHOPS —

8:30-11:30 Beckwith Point Hike (5 miles, moderate)
An "Eat-Hike-Eat" event led by the Tennessee Trails Association. Meet at the SAS dining hall for breakfast at 8:30 (cost $5.00), then take off from campus on a less-traveled section of the Shakerag trails that leads to a fabulous overlook. Return in time for the cookout in the SAS quad.

9:00-12:30 Wildflower Garden Ramble garden tour.
Buses depart from Chapel every 15-20 minutes between 9:00 and 11:00. Last bus departs at 11:00. (Cost $30.00, includes Trails & Trilliums Registration Fee.) Space is limited. Registration suggested. Visit 3 outstanding gardens overlooking Champion Cove and the gardens in nearby Red Oak Hollow. Creative use of native plants, water, and rock. Moderate walking required on woodland paths. Self-guided, go at your own pace. Estimated time is 2 hours. (

8:45-11:45 Shakerag Green’s View Wildflower Hike.
(2.5 miles. Moderate/Difficult, steep elevation change. The trail drops 500 feet below the bluff, then climbs back up.) Hikers will be shuttled to Green’s View at the University of the South and hike back to the SAS campus. Considered one of the premiere wildflower areas in the Southeast. Led by Mary Priestley and other members of the Sewanee Herbarium.

9:30-10:30 Nature in Watercolor Workshop
by Bob Askew, 2010 Trails &Trilliums featured artist. Bob will paint while he talks! A great opportunity to discuss watercolor techniques with one of Sewanee’s acclaimed artists and to view a number of his works. Spencer Room.

9:45-11:15 Shakerag Showcase Hike I.
(Moderate) Led by Sewanee Herbarium members. You will be shuttled to the trailhead, hike the upper portion of the Shakerag Hollow Trail, see scores of wildflowers, and then turn back to catch a van to SAS. Much less strenuous than the Shakerag hike from Green’s View.

10:00-11:30 Piney Point Hike.
Led by Dr. George Ramseur, 2008 recipient of the Yeatman Environmental Education Award, (1.2 mi. Easy-moderate, little elevation change). The trail, which ends in a spectacular bluff overlook, passes through sandstone outcrops, moss-lined bogs; and an upland forest of shortleaf pine, oaks, azalea, and mountain laurel.

12:00-12:45 Lunch & Learn with Mack Prichard,
2009 recipient of the Yeatman Environmental Education Award and State Naturalist Emeritus of Tennessee. Bring your plate to the Spencer Room where Mack will give a slideshow talk about the history of saving the Cumberland Plateau, providing an entertaining lead-in to the Keynote Event, which looks ahead to 2020.

1:00 - 2:00 KEYNOTE EVENT- CUMBERLAND WILD,
McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts "Plateau 2020: Envisioning the Future" A panel discussion on conservation issues on the plateau, organized by The Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area. Open to all. Hear from leaders of key organizations who are spearheading this initiative on the plateau, including the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation, the Alliance for the Cumberlands, and the State of Tennessee’s Department of Economic and Community Development.

2:15 -3:15 Nature in Textiles: Fabric Collage Workshop
by Diane Getty, noted fabric artist and the 2007 Trails & Trilliums featured artist. Demonstrations of sun printing (with photosensitive paints), fabric collage and surface embellishments. A chance to see a variety of Getty creations. Tucker Dining Room.

2:30-4:00 Otter Loop Trail Hike.
(1.2 miles. Easy-moderate. A few steep stretches.) Led by Dr. Harry Yeatman, noted naturalist and 2007 recipient of the Yeatman Environmental Education Award, and his knowledgeable wife Jean Yeatman. A lovely walk around the perimeter of the campus lake.

2:30-4:00 Shakerag Showcase Hike II.
(Easy-moderate) Led by members of the Sewanee Herbarium. You will be shuttled to the trailhead, hike the upper portion of the Shakerag Hollow Trail, see scores of wildflowers, and then turn back to catch a van to SAS. Much less strenuous than the Shakerag hike from Green’s View.

5:00-7:00 p.m.
WINE & WILDFLOWERS
In the Courtyard Garden of the Monteagle Inn. A reception honoring Mary Priestley, recipient of the 2009 Yeatman Environmental Education Award; and The South Cumberland State Recreation Area, recipient of the Trails & Trilliums Service Award $10.00 per person payable at the door. Wine and hors d’oeuvres. Live Music by Bazzania.


— SUNDAY APRIL 18 —

8:30 — A Trio of Fiery Gizzard Hikes
Meet at the SAS gym parking lot and carpool to the trailhead at Grundy Forest. Travel times included.

• 8:30-12:00: Sycamore Falls.
Hike leaders: Jim and Marietta Poteet, Friends of SCSRA members. A favorite destination at Fiery Gizzard, this 12-foot waterfall has one of the most picturesque settings (and most wonderful swimming holes) anywhere. Bring water for this 3-mile round-trip easy/ moderate hike. Hikers will return in time for brunch at SAS.

• 8:30-3:00: Wildflowers of Fiery Gizzard.
Hike leader: Mary Priestley, 2010 Yeatman Award Recipient and Friends of SCSRA president-elect. Discover the rarely seen wildflowers hidden among the boulder fields deep in Fiery Gizzard. Bring lunch and water for this 6-mile moderate to strenuous hike.

• 8:30-4:00: Raven Point Loop.
Hike leader: SCSRA Ranger Jason Reynolds. This 9-mile loop, including a stop at spectacular Raven Point, is exhilarating but difficult, so bring plenty of food and water to keep the furnace going strong.

9:00-12:00 Lost Cove "Temple" Hike
(Difficult.) Led by Archie Stapleton, SAS parent, on a private trail on the Stapleton property. The trail goes off the bluff on a downhill trail to see The Temple (one of the largest Tulip Poplar trees on the Plateau), and the convergence of two waterfalls that disappear into a cave. The hike back is very steep. Hikers will meet in the SAS gym parking lot and carpool to the trailhead to return in time for brunch on campus.
