Take a Hike!

— SATURDAY APRIL 17 —

8:30 - 11: 30 Beckwith Point Hike (5 miles, Moderate) An “Eat-Hike-Eat” event led by Jim and Marietta Poteet of the Tennessee Trails Association. Meet at the SAS dining hall for breakfast at 8:30 (cost $5.00), then take off from campus on a less-traveled section of the Shakerag trails that leads to a fabulous overlook. Return in time for the cookout in the SAS quad.

9:15 - 11:45 Shakerag Green’s View Wildflower Hike. (2.5 miles. Moderate/Difficult, steep elevation change. The trail drops 500 feet below the bluff, then climbs back up.) Hikers will be shuttled to Green’s View at the University of the South and hike back to the SAS campus. Considered one of the premiere wildflower areas in the Southeast. Led by Kate Cummings, Nathan Bourne, Mary Davis, and Mary Priestley, members of the Sewanee Herbarium.

9:45 - 11:15 Shakerag Showcase Hike I. (Moderate) Led by Yolande Gottfried and Alfire Sidik, Sewanee Herbarium members. You will be shuttled to the trailhead, hike the upper portion of the Shakerag Hollow Trail, see scores of wildflowers, and then turn back to catch a van to SAS. Much less strenuous than the Shakerag hike from Green’s View.

10:00 - 11:00 Piney Point Hike. (1.2 mi. Easy-moderate, little elevation change). Led by Dr. George Ramseur, 2008 recipient of the Yeatman Environmental Education Award. The trail, which ends in a spectacular bluff overlook, passes through sandstone outcrops, moss-lined bogs; and an upland forest of shortleaf pine, oaks, azalea, and mountain laurel.

2:30 - 4:00 Otter Loop Trail Hike. (1.2 miles. Easy-moderate. A few steep stretches.) Led by Dr. Harry Yeatman, noted naturalist and 2007 recipient of the Yeatman Environmental Education Award, and his knowledgeable wife Jean Yeatman. A lovely walk around the perimeter of the campus lake.

2:30 - 4:00 Shakerag Showcase Hike II. (Easy-moderate) Led by Jon Evans and Yolande Gottfried, members of the Sewanee Herbarium. You will be shuttled to the trailhead, hike the upper portion of the Shakerag Hollow Trail, see scores of wildflowers, and then turn back to catch a van to SAS. Much less strenuous than the Shakerag hike from Green’s View.

— SUNDAY APRIL 19 —

8:30 A Trio of Fiery Gizzard Hikes Meet at the SAS gym parking lot and carpool to the trailhead at Grundy Forest. Travel times included.

• 8:30 - 12:00: Sycamore Falls. Hike leaders: Jim and Marietta Poteet, Friends of SCSRA members. A favorite destination at Fiery Gizzard, this 12-foot waterfall has one of the most picturesque settings (and most wonderful swimming holes) anywhere. Bring water for this 3-mile round-trip easy/ moderate hike. Hikers will return in time for brunch at SAS.

• 8:30 - 3:00: Wildflowers of Fiery Gizzard. Hike leader: Mary Priestley, 2010 Yeatman Award Recipient and Friends of SCSRA president-elect. Discover the rarely seen wildflowers hidden among the boulder fields deep in Fiery Gizzard. Bring lunch and water for this 6-mile moderate to strenuous hike.

• 8:30 - 4:00: Raven Point Loop. Hike leader: SCSRA Ranger Jason Reynolds. This 9- mile loop, including a stop at spectacular Raven Point, is exhilarating but difficult, so bring plenty of food and water to keep the furnace going strong.

9:00 12:00 Lost Cove "Temple" Hike (1 mile. Difficult.) Led by Archie Stapleton, SAS parent, on a private trail on the Stapleton property. Hikers will meet in the SAS gym parking lot and carpool to the trailhead. This hike will lead to a beautiful spot in Champion Cove (adjoining Lost Cove) where two creeks converge and then disappear into a sinkhole next to one of the largest sycamore trees in Tennessee, affectionately called “The Temple.” Along the way, we will encounter seasonal wild flowers. There is no clearly marked trail in places, so prepare for some rough hiking at times. The hike back up is very steep. Return in time to enjoy brunch at SAS.
